ISIL in Afghanistan???

Won't happen according to quite a few new anti Taliban/anti ISIL militia that have been forming over the past year. There is a new group of former Mujaheddin in Northern Afghanistan approx. 5000 strong who call themselves MARG, which is the word for "death" in Dari. They have apparently met with the Balkh Provincial Council Office offering their service in fighting the ISIL/Taliban threat coming from the U.S. pull out. They are now active in 5 northern Afghanistan Provinces.

According to MARG, former GITMO detainee Abdul Rauf Khadim that was turned over to Afghan authorities in 2007 and escaped detention in 2009 (khadim was supposedly killed by a US drone strike 9 FEB 2015) was attempting to form a ISIL fighting force in Helmond, and there is, in fact, evidence he did set up fighter training camps there. According to the Afghan national Directorate of Security (their FBI) has stated that they have no strong evidence that ISIL is even in Afghanistan, let alone erected active training camps. MARG says ISIL is there and have also built a training camp in Farah and restive Khak-e-Safid district.

MARG is not alone in this, many anti Taliban/ISIL militia groups have sprung up over the past year. Most notable is a group formed by former Mooj Commander Haji Mahdiyar that has been estimated to be a large as 20,000 strong. he has stated that they have approx. 300 former Mooj commanders actively recruiting and training new militia members everyday since last year. Another group made up of mostly Turkmen are forming in the North, they are former members of the Northern Alliance. The Taliban is in for a very rude welcome once we pull out, its not going to be the rout by the Taliban that most people say it will.

Myself Im very happy to hear this good news, it would be BS if the Taliban did take over after we have spilled precious American blood in Afghanistan. This will probably be infectious with quite a few anti Taliban groups forming all over the countryside. Finally some good news coming from the Coalition pullout.

Lotsa Pike

Ran tip ups for about 7 hours without a flag even going up. Ended up catching a few perch while waiting. Only got 1 keeper though. Decided to make a move. Set the 2 tip ups again and started to jig for some pike. While jigging a spoon tipped with a golden shiner I had a few pike come to the hole. Couldn't get them to bite. Started to jig an xr50 and had a pike come full steam out of nowhere hitting my jig and scaring the crap out of me. Surprised I didn't get a hookset on the fish. During that 1 1/2-2 hour span I saw about 8 pike.

Lund Fisherman and the river

I'm looking at upgrading this summer, and the Lund Fisherman series is at the top of my list. The jump seats in the back, along with straight sides to lean up against while jigging, and the walk through windshield are all features this boat has that I am looking for. But before I go out and buy one, I have a few questions for the guys who own one:

1. How is this boat for jigging the river?

2. How is it to tow? Will my 1/2 ton Chevy be underpowered?

3. Could 5 guys comfortably jig out of one?

4. How is it for storage?

I currently am fishing out of a 1992 18' Fisher F/S, so I know how the wind tends to catch the walk through windshield a bit. The Fisher has been a good boat, but I am wanting something wider, better lay out, and more storage. Any advice is appreciated.

First hand gun

The reason to not have friends.

I have been completely happy with my shotguns for hunting, and the occasional trip out to shoot sheet. Now I've known plenty of people that have owned hand guns but until my buddy bought his I had only shot 1 previously, before he took me out to the range a couple times. That was all it took, I was hooked. So I bought one, a Taurus pt24/7 g2 in .40 sw, two weeks ago. I Haven't put to many rounds through it yet. I did 200 of misc ammo last weekend. 50 each of Winchester white box, federal aluminum, tulammo steel, and ABL reloads just to see how the gun would handle them. All where 180gr fmj. Not a single problem with anything, everything fed and fired well. The sights are slightly out but next trip I will adjust them next time I'm out. Adjustable sights was one of the things I liked about this gun. I'm already looking into my next two purchases and that is the reason to not have friends they just cost you money on things you didn't even know you needed.

Two way radios Crane Creek

It would be nice if all of us could be on a certain channel for fishing. I know at Crane Creek cell service sucks. If were all on one channel we could communicate with each other which would be nice in case of needs. Such as crack locations getting stuck or broke down or needing boards. Just a thought.

Michigan DNR appeals federal court's wolf decision

Michigan DNR appeals federal court's wolf decision

Contact: Debbie Munson Badini, 906-226-1352 or Ed Golder, 517-284-5815

Agency: Natural ResourcesFeb. 27, 2015

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today filed an appeal of a December 2014 federal district court ruling that returned wolves in Michigan and Wisconsin to the federal endangered species list and wolves in Minnesota to federal threatened species status.

The appeal – filed by the Michigan Attorney General in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia – asks the court to uphold the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's December 2011 decision that removed the Great Lakes Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of wolves from the federal endangered species list.

"Returning wolf management to wildlife professionals in the state of Michigan is critical to retaining a recovered, healthy, and socially-accepted wolf population in our state," said DNR Director Keith Creagh. "Michigan residents who live with wolves deserve to have a full range of tools available to sustainably manage that population."

Wolves in Michigan are 15 years past the population recovery goals set by the federal government. The DNR will argue against the federal district court's ruling that wolves must recover across their historic range – which includes the lower 48 states and Mexico – before Michigan's wolf population can be removed from the federal endangered species list.

In addition, the state will argue against the district court's conclusion that the USFWS failed to demonstrate that Michigan's laws and regulations adequately protect the wolf population within Michigan.

"Wolves in Michigan and the other western Great Lakes states are fully recovered from endangered species status, which is a great success story," said DNR Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason. "Continuing to use the Endangered Species Act to protect a recovered species not only undermines the integrity of the Act, it leaves farmers and others with no immediate recourse when their animals are being attacked and killed by wolves."

Michigan's wolf population numbers approximately 636 in the state's Upper Peninsula. With the return to federal protection in December 2014, the DNR lost the authority to use a variety of wolf management methods, including lethal control, to minimize wolf conflict with humans, livestock and dogs. The change in status also suspended state authority that allowed livestock and dog owners to protect their animals from wolf depredation when wolves are in the act of attacking those animals.

The federal district court's December 2014 decision came in response to a lawsuit filed by the Humane Society of the United States, in which the State of Michigan participated as a defendant-intervener arguing against returning the Great Lakes DPS of wolves to the endangered species list.

Michigan joins the USFWS and a number of hunting and conservation organizations in appealing the ruling.

For more information about Michigan's wolf population and management plan, visit http://ift.tt/1E0WNoh.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.

Slow Cooking a Whole NY Strip

I have a Big Steel Keg, (similar to the Green Egg), and have done a lot of slow cooking pork, turkeys, etc. I have a whole, untrimmed NY Strip, about 12#. Typically I would cut into steaks, or could probably cook it like a conventional roast, at 350-400 until it reaches 135. But, I would like to slow-cook it, with some charcoal/smoke. I have a temp control on the Keg, can maintain a consistent heat. My thoughts were cook it in a pan, do not trim too much of the fat pad, maybe 195 degrees for several hours, checking the internal temp. Letting it rest for a good long time before eating. Anyone ever done anything like this? Appreciate any thoughts, Thanks

Fish finder-less

Being a college student I tend to icefish with the basics. A bucket, 2 rods, and a small tackle box. I have no fish finder and and auger when ever a buddy lets me use one. I don't feel like spending the money on a fish finder right now and we're wondering what yall do to find fish on lakes without one. I know hole hopping is usually the go to tactic. But as far as finding out what depth and spot are best to hole hop, I'm not good at. I know cover has an effect and the build of the lake. Any other tips?

Always wanted to ask the End User

Hey guys, we are a powersports/fishing boat dealer, and have had several arguments internally over the years about customer expectations, as a boat buyer would you rather have a boat that is 100% flawless for full blown book plus some, or a boat that might have a split seam in seat or small little things at a more reasonable price...I have always wondered what the actual buyers prefer...as we all know bass boats are thru the roof as far as cost, and believe me the dealers pay thru the nose also...but a lot of times we could sell a boat a few thousand dollars less if we weren't upgrading electronics, or fixing split seams and so on....

Any diesel savvy/mechanics? 7.3 problems..

Ill start this by saying i have no experience with diesels, but am mechanically inclined, good problem solver.I've been having a string of what seems like fuel related problems in my '00 super duty w/130,000 miles on it. It feels like its starving for fuel when you get on it, not idling as smooth as it has in the past. I've changed the fuel filter 3 times over the past couple weeks. When I change it, it will run great for a few miles, then run like crap again. Almost like the fuel is gelling, but I have a whole bottle of 911 in the tank. I'm at a loss now. Anyone had these type of problems with there truck before, or can point me in the right direction?

best time of day to be in the shack

3 of us were out last weekend, and it was slow and kind of boring, they were running tip-ups, I was spearing. One of the guys called me and told me the other guy , ( who heard me say it was a little boring), said I need to understand , that 90% of the fish he has speared has been in the last hour or so of daylight, and that the rest of the time, I am basically just sitting there. does this make sense to anyone, or everyone? He is a sag. bay spear guy. does that create a difference. He also is a great fisherman who comes from a fishing family, and has a PHD in something, so tends to analyze things more than I do. I find so much of spearing, is like bowhunting, and short of the rut, I will not do all day sits. Do you guys have a preference of when to fish, or when not to?

Deer Hunting Videos

After watching the video "Kansas Hunting vs. Michigan" I feel obligated to make a comment on a topic that has bugged me for years. I'm talking about the celebration of a kill before the animal is recovered. I'm sure that Alvin is a nice guy but the recovery of this deer was certainly not a sure thing immediately following the shot. In my opinion, IF any celebratory action is deemed necessary, it should only be done when one is standing over the dead animal.

Sharpening Nils Augers - feedback?

I've been really going through the cutting heads on my augers due to extremely dirty ice in certain areas this year.

-4.5 inch Nils drill-style auger-

Nils recommends I send my heads to a certified sharpening service in Minnesota. However, many guys around here recommend Robisnson saw for auger sharpening.

Here's my specific question:

Have any of you had Robinson sharpen a Nils 4.5 cutting head, then used it for extended periods afterwards? If so, what were the results?

Please - I don't need feedback like "ya he sharpened my laser blades..." or "ya - but I've only used it once..."

Thanks, but I haven't heard of an example of someone getting the Nil heads sharpened and then used for a long period...

I'm a little nervous to take my heads there if Nils recommends only a certified type place...

Thanks for any info.

Rod/reel help

I am looking to purchase a new casting rod and reel. I have been looking at some G. Loomis rods and Lew's reels. I'm looking for a range of $150-200 for the rod and around $150 for a reel. Some interesting 'gill video (okay, I'm biased!)

Ignore the lack of quality. It's bad, I know! But in the limited video and a ton of similar observations off camera I saw some cool stuff.

I threw this together for the sole reason of showing some interesting reactions of the 'gills to my bait. First, if gills were in the hole as I dropped down they anticipated the drop of the bait and rather than track it all the way down, they appeared to go to where it should drop. Time and time again (not all on video) I watched this happened. Interestingly, they seemed to bite better if I stopped it and then they found it again, rather than letting it fall all the way the bottom.

Another interesting thing was how well (over the 2 days of fishing) a slow raise of the bait got the fish to finally commit. I had never tried a slow and steady raise...but it worked!

Pretty cool to see the blue gill "wolf pack" move around and accompanied by bass and perch at times.

Finally, the fish seemed to suddenly refuse the same bait they had been hammering all morning. I tried everything to get 'em to bite but they stopped and eventually disappeared.

Enjoy, like, and subscribe!

Dealership ?

So I have a great mechanic. I usually tell him what's wrong and he laughs and checks it and 90% of the time agrees and fixes it.

So my focus broke down in Lansing and I limped it to a dealership. Walked through the issue with my daughter to teach her. The smoking belt was easy to tell and a quick internet search backed up that the tensioners like to break. Nothing I could not fix in my heated barn at home. But it's in Lansing.

So the dealership makes me agree to a $90 charge to diagnose the issue. I told them what it was. They call back. It needs a new tensioner and belt. Really? Can I have my $90 back. $560 later with an oil change at least I can.pick it up tonight.

Having not used a dealership in years, is this common practice?

I was watching the Bone collector crew hunting in Texas at the Wexford ranch. They were there " managing " this ranch and were aloud and did shoot all bucks up to ten points. My question is how do they know what and what not to shoot ? They were shooting spikes, 4 points ,8 points and a few bigger bucks. How do the manager's know what the bucks would have become ? Me and my wife took in the 10:30 show what a great concert, he played all of his hits and I still have that [shameless] song playing in our heads. It was as loud as many Red Wing playoff game in March and was nice to see the new Cobo Hall on the Riverfront. Trisha Yearwood had all the gals singing to she's in love with the boy. Played some of the stuff from his new album but not to much concentrating on the hits that put him on top. If you can get there next week it would be a good time. Fished Erie yesterday with three other buddies. Got advise from local at the fuel station closest to crane creek. He sent us out to the southwest side of sister island and told us to stay west of Pack. What pack? Drove past thousands of shanties on the way out but no pack where he said. I think we got BUCKEYED!😄.. Moved several times till we settled 4 miles back towards shore. Long story short we landed 8 fish. Largest 8 lbs 2-6.5lbs the rest at 3.5 lbs. oh also got two 10 in perch. All but one was caught on wonder bread dogigger customized with red stripe on back side with bloody eye. Blue and silver jiggin rapp caught one of our fish but half of a near fisherman limit. I got the 8 and 6.5 which are my biggest walleys yet. WOW. Can't wait to get back down to get the 10 lb plus size. Will see you all March 6th. Lake Erie lodge is great location to stay but I would go in at crane creek access.

Moved a couple times and finally hooked another at 7:30pm about 2.9 miles out that also got off at the hole. The walk back was BRUTAL!!!! The only fish iced was by my friend on a tip up. The two i had on were on a blue and chrome do-jigger #1. 21 fow.

Spearing

About 8 of us are coming up to St Clair March 5-8, I am bringing a spear with me. My question is, do I throw the spear at perch or do I lower the spear into the water and jab at the perch? I would think throwing it would scare the fish and the other fish away also.

Cold War Propaganda?

When the cold war was in it's peak in the 1980's before the Berlin wall came down, and tensions were high, the Trojan Rubber Company received a very large condom order. It was from a Soviet Union state-owned Pharmacy chain. The order specified that they wanted 175,000 condoms, in packages of 25. They also specified that the condoms should be 24" long and 3 1/2" in diameter.

Not being sure if they would be allowed to fill the order because of the tensions between the two countries, Trojan's CEO visited the US State Department to see if it would be allowed. Due to the nature of the Soviet request, the CIA also got called into the meeting. Trojan's CEO asked them what they thought of the order. The Head of the State Dept. said, "I don't think the order should be filled, just on general principles". The Head of the CIA said, "I think it's Soviet propaganda to try and make us think that the Russian's are much more well endowed than Americans are".

The Trojan CEO said, "Well what do I do then?" The head of the State Dept. and CIA agreed that only the President can make an important decision like this, and proceeded to call Ronald Regan.

Mr. President, should we, or should we not, fill this order? Ronnie said, "Sure, go ahead and fill the order as specified, just make sure that all of them are clearly labeled 'small'".

Ice Fishing Rig!

Hey guys I was scrolling thru craigslist and came upon a ice fishing rig called Thewilcraft. I own a argo avenger decked out for ice fishing and was pretty overwhelmed with this rig! The price is half of the argo and it is it's own fish shanty, boat, and utv. I watched several videos on this unit at there website Thewilcraft.com and was simply amazed how it will float in water and pull itself back onto the ice. They now offer a AWD unit with tons of accessories, just thought I'd bring this up for you fellow die hard ice men! I wish I had the capability to down load videos off there website for you but limited when it comes to internet. So check them out at Thewilcraft.com.

Brown Blast 2014 sign-up April 18th

The Brown Blast is once again back for our 12th year. We have moved the date a little bit later in the season so we don't have the ice issues like we had last year. (hopefully). for 2015, the date is the 18th of April. This year Darrin Schaap of Clear H2O Tackle is going to sponsor and run the show with some assistance from myself and others.

I am asking for a volunteer to help keep the sign up current and also for another volunteer to assist Darla at the weigh in. With my current health concerns, I have to take a step back from this.

Same rules will apply as last year but we are changing the weigh-in venue.

We are back to the Boat House once again!!!, it now called The Tavern on the River located at 600 Fisherman's Rd in St. Joe. They will have some drink and food specials for us. We also have use of the 12 boat slips once again for those that want to slip your boats or make it an overnight stay. As a bonus, we also have the use of the fish cleaning station next door as it is now all owned by the same people. That also opens up additional parking down by the fish cleaning station. The agreement is that we leave the fish cleaning station in better condition after we use it.

Pay your money at weigh in or before, here is the deal, if you sign up for this event and don't show we cover you. Then we expect payment ASAP. Pure and simple, commit and you are in, Commit and do a no show, send us your money. If you have to drop, you must post your drop on this thread no later then midnight the day before the event or call myself or Darrin with-in the same time frame.

We will do a captains meeting (not mandatory) Friday evening at the Tavern on the River, you can pay your entry there if you wish. We will make a weather call by 8:00 PM Friday evening and post it here on this tread.

The Coast Guard Aux will be doing boat inspections once again. Guys, do the inspection. If you don't pass, no big deal, correct the issue and then go to any CG and get your sticker. No fines, no penalties, no warnings. We have, over the years out of this port, lost brothers to the sea...this is our part to make us safe... take part in the inspections... there is no cost for this.

So, April 18th, everyone must launch out of St. Joseph or Benton Harbor, be that a slip or a launch. The river is fair game. Launch any time but lines in no earlier then 5 am, stop any time you want to but you must be at the weigh in ready for weigh in by 2 PM. That means in line ready to show your fish or you are DQ'd Give yourself plenty of time to recover your boat and get parked.

Rules of the game---

Weigh a 1 man DNR, 3/2, 2/3 or 5 salmon. As always, we play by the DNR rules.......

Except.......

9 rods max, I know some can run more but nine in the water at any one time but a max of 9 rods.

3 man limit in your catch....

10 pts per fish

1 point per pound

10 bonus points for each brown trout.

Weigh up to 5 fish (one man DNR)

This is still a $40 entry, with $5.00 going into the big fish pot. Big fish can be any species. Payout is 100% and the number of cash places depends on the number of boats. As we get closer, we will post up the payout schedule

OK, let’s use this thread for a simple sign up. For discussion, let's start a new thread.....

Youth Deer Hunting Season: Good or Bad?

I'm doing a story for a national hunting magazine about the effects of youth deer hunting seasons on hunter recruitment and the future of deer hunting. I'm looking to talk with some deer hunters who are in favor of youth deer hunting seasons, and those who are against them. I just want to collect differing opinions and anecdotal stories from deer hunters. If interested, please call me at (517) 290-6471 or email me at Dwarneroutdoors@gmail.com.

Thanks.

Clearing a few homebrew builds $175.00 each

All built over the past few months and all are issue free and wired for extended battery life while in the field. All have been fully tested for motion detection ability, day/night picture quality, and each has been subjected to a two minute underwater dunk test and passed.

The Sony S600's are noted for their exceptional day or night picture quality and flash range making them ideal for field edge/small food plot use and the P41 just keeps on taking pictures during even the most brutal of conditions and makes for a great trail monitoring camera because of its speed, around 1 second from motion detection to initial trigger.

Pictures taken by each model camera may be seen by clicking on this album link, slideshow mode works great with good internet service.'

http://ift.tt/1ME7v8c

Asking $175.00 each firm, paypal preferred but money order accepted. Each will include priority shipping in the lower 48, full operating instructions, a pair of memory cards and card adaptors for camera/pc uploading use as well as a 3.7 lithium battery for the control board power source.

Other similar type builds may be available as well so pms are more than welcome. - See More Here: http://ift.tt/1ME7wch

Fly shop guys in Ohio fish the PM every year

So I got sent to a training class for Hot Spring Spas in Centerville(Dayton) OH last week. A few months back I had bought a pair of Orvis waders and boots online from a fly shop in Oh. I always stay local but I got a really good deal on the waders. I got out of class Tues and hit my computer at the hotel and punched in Fly shops in Centerville and turned out that fly shop was right down the same road I as the hotel I was at so I went and met the guys I had talked to a few times which was really nice.

Nice bunch and the owner Todd Mikesell and the guys there come up and fish the PM every year. They know the owners of the fly shop here in Traverse too, small world.

Just down the road was a brand new Field and Stream store that just opened so I wasted some time there too while I was in town. It was alot like Cabelas or Bass Pro in Missouri, cool store.

The class was good but came back last Fri sicker than a dog, fever for 2 days and thought I was dying. But better now so I need to get those rod racks finished this week and then on to the drift boat build. Next couple days here 20-30 below zero, the bay has officially frozen over for the 2nd year so the water will be cold this next summer like last, and spring steel looks farther away, dang it :fish:

Help with 199B

Little confusion here, looking for some help. I had a Blackrock- believe mutual fund- for the last 15 years. I liquidated it this summer to put the downpayment on a new truck. Is there anything else I should know or do to file?

Should a Tom decoy resemble a boss or not?

I am in the process of assembling a Tom decoy from an old fan and beard. Iam making the head out of styrofoam. I will make some sort of black body shapeand add some real wing feathers. All said and done I will mount it to my xbowpistol. The plan is to start at the edge of an open area lure a Tom into it andsneak up to him and put a bolt in him at 5 yds. Should I make it resemble a boss Tom or a lessorsubordinate bird?

Whats a lady to do when she retires?

This lady, retired from analytical chemistry and electrical instrument tech has to maintain her trails. We live on 40 acres so my wife has a couple miles of trails for walking her dogs. She doesn't like to walk the road especially in the winter with the salt and cars sliding around. I built Bonnie a stone boat that she pulls behind the quad but today the snow surpassed the quads capability. The john deere with the hydraulic back blade reduced the snow depth to a manageable level. Bonnie has two 12 year old dogs and a ten month old pup. The dogs free trail the first loop and the pup does the second loop on the leash, he much prefers free running. Where the dogs are able to free run they get about 5 miles of exercise in a mile. The one dog, Lilly that I posted earlier about does have an auto immune skin disease and I fear her time is short.

Bowhunters... Which ground blind?

I have the opportunity this year to hunt an area that is archery only. I've thought about using a crossbow, which would be similar to my shotgun run and gun style of turkey hunting. But I would rather shoot a bird with my compound. My issue is that my doghouse blind isn't large enough for me to comfortably draw my bow without being detected by the keen eyesight of a turkey.

So I ask the experienced turkey bowhunters, which ground blind do you have or would recommend?

I hunt a variety of areas from hardwoods to field edges. And would possibly use this blind for deer hunting in the future. Although I'm confident if I can fool a turkey then I'd be fine with a whitetail. Don't know if these will change opinions, but thought I would throw them out there.

Thanks in advance!

Bowhunters... Which ground blind?

Need to darken the shack!

OK...I bought a new Clam Thermal hub for my solo sits this year. Awesome shack, I love it!

Only issue is that it's just a bit too light on the inside. The material isn't black on the inside like most other non thermal hubs and I've noticed a big difference in ambient light. My other hubs are all blacked out inside and its as close to perfect as can be for portables IMO.

Looking for ideas on how to go about blacking out the inside of the new shack! I'm thinking about just lightly spray painting the inside with a rattle can but not sure if it would harden up the material too much? I think a material dye would work but don't want it to bleed through to the exterior......1,2,3 go....

Copper Harbor

My family is taking a trip up to Copper Harbor the first week of August. We've done the trip a handful of times now, but have only taken a canoe. This year, we'll be taking the fishing boat. In the past, I've fished Fanny Hooe for walleye, pike, smallmouth, and accidentally caught splake in the late 90s. We've also fished Managanese for trout and the Harbor but only from shore. I'd like to make it a fun multi species trip. Never been up there in the summer, so I'm not sure what the fishing is like. We stay on Fanny Hooe, and we'll likely be fishing Fanny Hooe, Manganese, and the harbor. I'm assuming the splake probably aren't in the harbor in abundance this time of year? Also, anybody have experience fishing Fanny Hooe this time of year? Any other help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to fish the big lake, but I don't have the boat to do that and won't be going on any charters.

I have a field that has grown up over three yrs without being cut. My question is should I cut it this spring or leave it be? I was thinking cutting it might help it grow better.

Newaygo brewing company

Good news to those who are looking for yet another reason to visit the mighty mo for a day of fishing. Soon, very soon there will be a brewery right downtown for tried anglers to stop and grab a bite and pint before heading out. They have released the name of their first beer to be on tap via Facebook as steelhead red stout. Sounds like a winner for me. Hopefully they'll be up and running inside the month. The brewmaster is a guy who has ran and sold a successful brewery in Sparta and his blends and brews are very good.

Otter Lodge vs Frabill Predator vs others?

I'm looking at pulling the trigger on a larger flip shanty to be able to take out friends, the girlfriend or her kids. I have a Eskimo Wide 1 which I love and will be keeping for solo trips. I also have an older smaller Clam twin hub (aka A frame) which I really hate and want to upgrade.

As much as I hate Gander, I was able to sit in and and putz around with a fully assembled Lodge 650 today. I also played with a Predator in Cabela's last week (it's now gone).

Both are a little more then I really wanted to spend, but I figured if I bought it right and took care of it I could always get most of my money back.

For fishing with the GF or the kids I really do prefer the bench seat.

Anyone have either of these that can offer any feedback? Is there another 2+-3 man flip shanty that won't break the bank that I'm overlooking?

I'll be up around Frank's on Monday and might head to Jay's also. Any other places that would have them?

Lastly...would I be better just holding off until Shanty Days next year at Frank's? I'd really would like to be able to get out this year but again I don't want to break the bank if waiting is much better off.

Thanks all!

Last day gills/crappie

Well today was the last day of my icefishing for the year before I return to South Carolina tomorrow.

My dad and I fished a canal between the raft and Algonac from 7:30am-6:15pm. Weather started out great but you all know how that ended.

Anyway, we managed to put about 20 gills and a crappie in the bucket. Nothing huge but good eaters. Saw some big gills and crappie. Had a couple nice crappie come unbuttoned at the hole. All in all not a bad day.

Caught all my fish on a gill pill in pink/chartreuse, copper color tear drop, and a pink/glow tungsten tubby with a blood worm soft plastic. Tipped the jigs with a spike or two or a moussie. Moussies were the best bait for me in the afternoon.

Again, I'd like to say thank you to all of those who offered the tips, hints, and suggestions on where to fish on my 3 day season. I'm sure the fishing would have been better had I not brought this wonderful weather with me.

Staples

The POTUS is showing his true colors again.... Didn't Obamacare create the 30 hour work week and part-time employment? What ever happened to success & hard work being a positive thing? Attacking companies & individuals that are successful seems to go against the American way. Lowering the bar so everyone can participate in the American dream doesn't seem to be working....

When are people going to wake up????

Wow,

Where did the Canadians come from? Anyway Detroit is in 3rd place, 3 points out and playing some solid hockey (8-2 in their last 10). Mike has done an incredible job with this team. 31-13-9....17-4 at home. Playing over .500 on the road at 14-9 at this is the difference imo, they play everybody tough on the road, the mark of a solid Hockey club. If they play road hockey like this in the play offs, they have a real shot at going deep. I did not expect this from this team this season, I thought maybe a few games over .500 in the toughest division in the NHL.

Wow,

Just where are the "Trophies" taken...

It occurs to me that these APR's are already in place for those with private land. So, lets see some graphs representing exactly where these "Trophies" are being taken. Some more graphs representing the age structure and ensuing increase in the harvest of this larger proportion of Trophy Deer. And some more graphs representing the loss of hunters and drop in harvest on public lands.

Saturday fishing weather

Planning on hitting the mouth Saturday. With the cold temps and wind forcast do you think it will be ok in shanty? I have a Clam Yukon shanty, heater all that stuff just don't want it to blow away the minute I step out of it. I'm coming from a couple hours away and appreciate any feedback prior to AM. I hate changing fishing plans due to the weather and typically I don't.

Thanks,

About 6:00 no fish just gettin ready to pack it up and my rap got hammered pulled up a 26"er ( personal best through the ice)so decided to wait it out for a bit longer and nothin but a long cold ride back to vandy

Lowrance Elite 7

Just broke down and bought Elite 7 gold. Figured the hard part would be mounting it to the quad, and fitting it to the ICE pack bag, wrong. No problems with hook up and mounting but does anyone know what transducer the ice transducer is? Does anyone else have the Navionics gold chip, does it show POI's on land? Any help with software help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone is looking for a GPS, I have a Garmin 541 with the updated great lakes HD chip. I do not have the transducer for this, was just using it as a GPS.

Forest landowners invited to learn about the timber tax

Posted Feb. 12, 2015 @ 1:30 pm

There will be a free informational session on timber tax for forest landowners on Wednesday, February 18 at 6 p.m. at the St. Ignace Public Library.

Hosted by the Chippewa/Luce/Mackinac Conservation, in conjunction with the Forestry Assistance Program, the program will feature presentations from Susan Metcalfe of Metcalfe Forestry LLC and Burns Timber Tax Service.

The tax treatment of timber sale income is a highly specialized area of the federal tax code.

This informational session will focus on: reporting timber as capital gains, creating the cost basis of timberlands, depletion accounts and depletion deductions, determining management expenses, and filling a Federal Form T with your taxes.

Landowners who have had a timber sale in the past three years, plan a timber harvest in the future or have recently purchased forest land will benefit from this presentation.

Light refreshments will be provided. The St. Ignace Public Library is located at 110 W. Spruce Street.

Please RSVP by February 17 to receive an informational packet at no cost.

For more information, contact Brook Alloway at (906) 632-9611 ext. 109.

Chipmunk Invasion

We have been invaded by chipmunks in the spaces between the wall and celling joists in the house. I have tried mothballs and dryer sheets to keep them out, but they keep on coming back. Using pieces of wood to cover the chewed in invasion holes just gets them to chew a new hole next to the edge of the board and it starts again.... Help!!!!!

Apology to officers

I want to apologize for my actions regarding a post about a person not being convicted of poaching. The incident took place in Montcalm County and is in regards to the post about 3 bucks being shot. LegalBeagle was my previous screen name so I'm sure I'll be banned in a minute but I just wanted to apologize first.

I jumped to conclusions and it was wrong. I'm sorry to all it affected, especially the CO involved. He took care of business and I should've looked further into it before making accusations. I respect the DNR and the work they do especially considering their large patrol area. If I could take back everything that was said I would've. Believe me, I tried! (All I could do was erase the pictures) It was a moment of frustration that hurt others and that isn't acceptable. I formally apologized to the CO, but I felt I needed to do this publicly as well.

Again, I'm sorry for assuming nothing had been done in the case.

Thank you.

campground recommendation

I am looking for a family friendly campground in northeastern Michigan or even southern part of the UP. I never really camped in northeastern Michigan usually on the west side of the state. So I am not to familiar with any campgrounds in this part of the state. I looked at some on the internet but thought I would hear some opinions on campgrounds from you guys/girls on this website. We are going up a couple of days to Tawas during the 4th of July and thought to take the wife and kids camping the rest of the week. We are looking for a campground that has a pool or lake for swimming, clean restrooms and showers, canoeing/kayak near by, may be a place to fish and somewhat secluded sites for tents(I don't really want to camp in a wide open field with a bunch of RV's) Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Skegemog Elk Walleye?

I spend lots of time on these lakes but have never caught one. One time found a 5-6# dead floater on Skegemog. Have also heard that these lakes hold a few (particularly Elk), if you know how to find / catch them.

Also have heard that Skegemog holds a few crappie, but have never caught one.

Curious if anyone has had any luck on these lakes for either?
