Again this year the Mi DNR is asking that anglers report their catches of Atlantic salmon on Lake Huron for 2015. Please take a picture of the fish showing where the fin was clipped. Along with the picture post the length weight port in which the fish was caught and whether it was caught from the boat or shore. You can post here as I will be getting the pictures and information off of here or you can email the information to fishsqueezer12@gmail.com. I will make sure and get...Just an FYI if you happen to be looking for a tow behind cultipacker. I found a guy on Craigslist in St. Charles that makes them. I think he has 4 and 5 footers right now, and may have other lengths as well. I needed some custom work done, my trails are narrow, and I wanted wheels on it. He did a great job, used quality materials, and I couldn't be happier. His prices are very reasonable for the quality of work he does. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM and I'll find his phone number.

I have an 1897 16 gauge with a poly choke, was my grandpa's, that I still take out on occasion. However, I would like to move from the stone age to maybe the bronze age and pick up a Model 12.
I've read the sticky and I believe I'm not violating the rules about gun values, if not, please let me know.
1. What a reasonable cost for a decent (read used but not abused) shooter Model 12? I'm not going to baby it, so it needs to have a few appearance issues already present so I don't put the first ding on it, but it also needs to be 100% functional.
2. Does a poly choke affect the value? Again, being a shooter, it doesn't bother me - I actually would prefer it, but the ones I've looked at it doesn't seem to matter if it's a straight choke, a Cutts, or a Poly on the end in regards to price.
3. How hard it is to plug the gun for migratory bird hunting?
4. Anything else I need to know about the model 12's?
I have a couple lined up to look at, one is a $900 20 gauge vent rib without a mark on it that's way too nice, but man, that thing just fits like a dream. My daughter shoots a custom fit Beretta 390 and she didn't want to put that model 12 back.
The 1897 is a trip. Nothing better than hunting with a new crew who all pull out SBE2's and I pull out a 100 year old veteran.
I already have made plans on making a metal box that is lag bolted to a tree so they can't steal my trail cam.
I also plan on buying another trail cam that I can use with my smart phone.
I feel that these folks where invading my privacy and have no right to follow me on my private property. I have nothing against drones if you use them in a appropriate manner.

ATTENTION MICHIGAN FISHERMEN:
We have a HUGE statewide political battle and we need your HELP. I received an email on a call to action and I will paste below.
Our state has a coalition made up of the (MSSFA, TU, MUCC, MEC, MCBA, Anglers of the Au Sable). Luckily for us they have began efforts to provide Senator Jones with sub language to his SB 526 that bans aquaculture on the Great Lakes and connecting waterways, which would have preserved existing aquaculture operations with stricter regulations on treating waste and flow through water.
This would have increased the chances of SB526 passing. Then, in planned confederacy, the Senate Republicans, Booher, Robertson, Shirkey and Casperson and House Republicans introduced bills (SB’s 681, 682 & 683) that virtually rewrite the “Michigan aquaculture development act” passed in 1996. Reps. Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan) and Triston Cole (R-Mancelona) put forward an identical package to Booher's in the House with HB 5166, HB 5167 and HB 5168.
These bills are devastating to our lakes, streams and rivers and threaten wild fish and our sport fishery’s ability to co-exist. If you read the bills (and you should) there are numerous changes that remove regulations and oversight of these operations.
The most egregious are: Shifts rulemaking power to the Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development and away from DNR and DEQ; circumvents the Public Trust Doctrine, interposes a Right to Farm piece; allows up to ten net pens on the Great Lakes; removes the ability of townships to impose authority over the operations (Right to Farm); riparian rights are impaired, tribal rights via treaty are trampled on; bottom land use at no charge; and sport fishing license statue being amended so they can collect wild fish and put them in their aquaculture facilities (Taking of Fish).
Read the paragraph ABOVE one more time. You should be alarmed and must do your part to make your voice heard. All fishermen need to ban together and fight this. Stay tuned to this blog and I will keep you posted on any developments. I urge you to contact your representatives to make your objections known and YOU MUST ask them to do their part in defeating these bills.
Before the trip even started, I was watching wind and wave forecasts for weeks leading up to our planned charter and things weren't looking overly promising. However about 3 days before we left MI, the wind forecasts were suddenly dying down and we were looking at single digit winds on our trip
The day of our trip was perfect - started off a little chilly in the 60s but no clouds and 5mph winds. We chartered with Captain Skye of the Blue Heaven out of Robbie's Marina. The plan for the day was to start off fishing for yellowtail and mackerel in the morning and then go after mutton snapper and cobia in the afternoon.
We first started by netting bait:
One toss of the net and we had a fair amount of bait to start the day. What happened next was pretty cool - at the dock one of the other captains was having some sort of issue and talking with our captain (lost his cast net or something) After we netted bait, the 2 captains met on the water and our guy hooked him up with a bucket of bait and I thought that was really cool and some good karma
After getting bait, we started hitting up various spots trying to find some willing snapper and mackerel. Fishing for the snapper was a little slow mainly because we were getting swamped by grunts which we kept for bait. We tried several spots and it was the same thing. I think we managed 3 yellowtails, 2 spanish mackerel, and a mangrove snapper.
Eventually the capt came down from his perch with some news - apparently there were a few boats fishing the humps and they were on a great blackfin tuna bite. So the capt gave us the choice of pecking away at snapper or taking the long ride out for tuna. That was a no-brainer so off we went. On the way out we found a floating log and did a couple passes for mahi but no one was home. When we got out to the humps there was maybe another 6-8 boats out there.
So we're getting set up and watching the other boats live chumming and free lining and getting a hook up or 2 every drift and just getting all amped when the unthinkable happens - we could not buy a bite! We did a couple drifts without hooking anything so our captain yells to one of the other boats and asks about their bait - apparently we had the wrong type of pilchards. What happened next was amazing (remember the karma I mentioned before) - this huge 40'+ boat motors towards us and gives us 2 huge nets of their bait. After that it was game on - my gf started it off by hooking and landing a nice skipjack. She then followed it up with a nice blackfin and had another straighten her hook after a long battle. I finally got in on the action and nailed this nice fatty:
We hooked several more and it was a helluva workout. All in all we finished with 5 blackfin.
Here's the rest of our catch:
On the way back in, the captain stopped and met one other boat on the water and gave them our bait and some info on the fishing to earn a little more good karma.
I have about 3 acres of food plots on this 100+/- acres, tons of acorn forage from the oaks, some old growth apple trees, etc. Come spring, there are still uneaten groceries in my plots so I feel there is sufficient food on the property. I don't think I have enough cover to hold deer when the woods get human pressure.
My question is this... Is it possible to use these 2-5" diameter aspen to create bedding areas? I spent some time out there Sunday to see what it would look like. I picked two small test areas and took down 12-15 trees in each, but i'm not sure I will get the result I want even in a large area taking down all the trees. I have a feeling I will just end up with ferns growing to the top of my hinge and not much thickness once the leaves drop.
I actually didn't really hinge these trees. I tried and it worked OK but the bark didn't hold great. So I ended up pulling them over and wedging them or weaving them together like pickup sticks. Some I would make a small cut on the back side to prevent them from springing back up. This technique worked pretty well. Next time I will probably bring some twine and tie them off.
Anyone have any insight?
Thanks, it is a challenge. If you look at this fly from across the room, looks ok. To a classic tyer, it shows some sign of effort, but still a mess. Thats ok though, I`m learning alot. Hope some day to post that I nailed it! I`m liking all the steelhead flys going around, I need to switch gears a little.

I've been a member for a few years now, but I just realized that I never finished my profile. I love most hunting and fishing but walleye fishing, and bow hunting are my favorite things to do outdoors. I really like reading the reports on Michigan-sportsman.That was the last rabbit I shot with Sam. He went to the great hunting grounds with his brother January 10th and I still miss him terribly.
Don't know if I'll rescue another. I've been blessed with good dogs but saying goodbye is so hard.

Was up there two weeks ago and had plenty of ice, anybody know how it is holding up want to go up this weekend! Thanks in advanceMy house is a bi-level and I have a deck off of my kitchen on the upper level. It is 8' deep by 14' long. We never really use it much in the summer mostly because the bugs are a little more than we can bare, so I'd like to enclose the deck (seasonally). I don't want it to be a permanent addition to my house, just an enjoyable space in the summer months. Having it even add value to my home would be even better!
I would like to enclose the entire deck with screen. The screens themselves I'd like to either be magnetically held in place, or by snaps, or however which way is most effective - yet still being able to put them up/down as needed. The part I'm not sure about is a roof for my enclosure? I thought of maybe making a small "roof", but I have dryer vents that may get in the way. Any suggestions here? The space would be REALLY nice in the summer if it was enclosed with a roof. Little deck furniture, mini fridge, fan and possibly a small TV and I'd probably never leave! There is already outlets out there, so all the amenities would be easy!
I appreciate any help or input!
Ignore the mess. Trying to get some cleaning done while it was nice!
After this thread, I think I need a smoke!

Here we go guys....time to take it back. Sorry, no pep talk just yet. Let's just kill some good birds again this year.....I predict another 6 for 6 for the Fools this season!I was catfishing in the "Aerojet" canal just outside Everglades Park. Our pay had not caught up with us after a PCS move from Japan via Ft. Bragg.
Several of us rented tackle at special services, our plan was to augment our food with fresh caught cats.
The "tackle" was Zebco bait casting reels on really junkie rods.
I saw the rod tip "dip" slightly and I set the hook. Instantly I knew I was in trouble. Catfish don't rocket straight up 3 or 4 feet when hooked!
I chased that fish, having no idea what it was at the time, it was almost midnight, up and down the canal.
After about an hour I managed to land it, only then learning what it was.
That was late 1972. Long before cell phones with cameras. Too bad, I be Zebco would have loved to have had pictures of that catch!

From 3/ 8 heads with a 2- 3 inch white rubber crawler tip in Canada ,to mariboo dressed on high traffic water in Mi. they have produced.
2. A french style spinner with a redtubed hook shank worth having.
3. Rapala' s , l.o.l..
One evening three consecutive casts produced a jumbo perch, a slabber gill and just legal largemouth . Would have made a great commercial.
4. Might as well throw a silver spoon in with those.
5. A purple and white crawler with a harness allowing a stinger hook at tail.
I fished at 6th St for a couple hours, on Thanksgiving. I had 1 bite, and landed a 10# fish. I saw other fish caught, and none were smaller than mine, while I was there. Lake Michigan is producing good numbers of big Steelhead right now. I don't think planting more Steelhead will significantly reduce the forage enough to make them a lot smaller, but who knows? Steelhead have a pretty diverse diet. But they get big, and fat on Alewives.
Tying a few feet of line to a long stick with the bark whittled off, using a small twig as a float, and HAMMERING Green Sunfish, Orangespotted Sunfish, bullheads, and BIG Golden Shiners, with redworms as bait. Most. Fun. Ever. Forest Park, St. Louis, MO, visiting family.

There is one thing you need to understand about some of these drugs, and that is the fact that Nexguard and Frontline (and other similar drugs) are NOT tick deterrents, they simply kill fleas and ticks AFTER the bug has bitten the dog by overloading the bug's nervous system. So, you can very well still find fleas and ticks on your dog even with proper use of these drugs, but they will likely be dead or just perusing your dog's fur for a place to bite, at which point they will die.
Sawyers tick spray (permetherin) is effective for not only ticks, but all bugs. You spray it on your hunting clothing (outdoors), and it lasts for a long time, even through multiple washes. But as Nick said above, it is not always effective, ticks are nasty as hell. IMO the best protection is just covering yourself. For the dogs, Nexguard and a thorough tick inspection after being in the field.
One final note, is that there has been a bizarre surge in cases of Lymes disease in Michigan and other states in the past year. Many are now opting to use the vaccine in conjunction with drugs like Nexguard, and I think that is a prudent move (keeping in mind that the vaccine may not protect against all strains).

just curious who else trashes rapala baits when casting rocks or catching a few toothy predator fish. I have a few rapalas down to the wood finish. Is this common ?Carp are probably the most reliable "big fun" fish we have in the state. I grew up on the banks of the Muddy Maple/Upper Grand and I have a deep respect for the common carp. They are super fun to tangle with on hook and line. Their babies sure make pike/catfish and other predators fat also. There was good reason our forefathers brought them here.
I fish them from an ice cold gravel pit occasionally. From good cold clean water the smaller carp are damn fine table fare too. I actually prefer clean water carp to them nasty azz salmon for the table truth be told. When I finally realized how good a fish a carp actually is I quit shooting them with my bow out of respect. If more people respected them like they deserve some fisheries would not be "feed/bait shy" like they are in my opinion.
I love carp, sheepshead, bullheads, suckers, bowfin and all the other red haired stepchildren of the fishing world. If there were more open minds in the U.S others would too.

Me and 3 of my buddies are heading up there the last week in February. We are all die hard walleye guys and with Lake Erie not cooperating the last year or so it's time to go. We have all the equipment and have done a lot of research. Just looking for some good launching points or some starting coordinates. Any info tips or tactics to make the trip more enjoyable for all of us would be appreciated. This may be the single biggest debate with guys. Some starters imo: sunline ff2, 16lb, suffix siege 12 lb, cxx 12 lb, also hear a lot of great stuff about promix. Cycle thru them, once you find one you are happy with stick with it. For me and great lakes steel personally it's 16 ff2, to 12 drennan shot line, to either 5, 6, or 8 drennan leader.

An octopus only regrows an arm and not another octopus . Accepted theory anyway.
Cloning it would seem should be from recipient.
Growning a limb from a donor might risk a very different proportion ,and affect gait in a greater manner than correctable.
Too ,rejection risks.
Doubtful any soul is attached to a limb , though an electrical aura may or may not exist ( as found in studying ) where a missing limb was.
None of my soul seems to be missing from a missing limb.
While aura like ,a soul is not tangible.
Study then ,in my opinion should focus on the regineration vs introducinga foreign donor part.

So I was riding he ferry back across from Canada last night and one of the ferry workers told me his buddy caught some limits of walleye in the North Channel in the area of deckers. Has anyone been out there that could confirm this. Also just and FYI from what I seen of the river it is ice free now.My pup is 12 weeks old now and he is getting big fast. He has great webbing on his big ol paws. He is a relatively calm dog, but he does like to run around and play with my room mates mastiff. He is really brave, punching well above his class against his 100 lb friend, and does not seem to get tired easily. He fetches his toys a little bit, but more prefers to chase them around. HOWEVER, I have a half dozen clipped mallard wings that I had laying around from my last hunt, and when I whip them across the yard he goes and retrieves them for me, and brings them to hand about 80% of the time. the other 20% he will get distracted by a neighbors car door or something, or want to go inside (assuming because of the cold). It is very encouraging that he retrieves the wings for me (and does so repeatedly) but he does not have insane amounts of drive or anything (I dont even know if i should notice a ton of drive yet though). He is a fairly calm dog but he bounds happily to the wing on each throw. Oh, and he watched a flock of passing geese in the sky yesterday. That made me happy.
I get waves of worry when he chooses to not get the wing, or to touch it and run a little bit more, but then he brings it to hand and nixes those fears. So i am in a constant wave of how to feel about my new friend. The fact that he is border collie gives him some added intelligence, so I am hoping that this will turn into ability to hunt, but I am not sure if intelligence will trump drive. He seems to want to make me happy, and im sure that will grow as i have only had him for 2 weeks.
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for trying to begin a dogs training in the winter, and if there are any additional steps i should take with a lab-mix. Or if anyone has any positive mix breed stories to boost my confidence in him. I love the guy, and i really really want him to become my duck dog. So with that, here is my pup vader the day after i got him.

Two words - keep one, drop one, add one.Bottom line is that i did get "caught" and had to remedy the situation. Which really meant that i paid twice the price of the original permit as a fine, which came out to a total of $150. I also had to request the permit as an "uninhabitable" storage shed.
In hindsight, i'd probably have got the permit ahead of time and said very little about it's intended purpose but either way, i'm violating whenever i use it for my weekend getaways. Technically, they could fine me for sleeping on my property but after going round and round with the local zoning person, we seem to have come to an understanding. She knows i use the shed as a cabin when i'm visiting but she doesn't check it anymore.
If you horse a fish on a rod above its line rating, they will break. My buddy blew up two consecutive st croix avids on salmon one year. Running 8 lb leaders on an 8 wt rod. Fresh chrome fury with a bunch of current.

That was a problem I had two years ago when I tapped a bunch of trees I thought were maples, which I tried to identify in Februrary with no leaves. Result - no sap. For me it is hard to identify maples with no leaves, although I'm sure an expert woodsman like Trout could figure it out. There are resources on the internet and in bookstores/libraries that help you identify maples by the shape of the tree, branches, buds and bark. Sorry I don't have specific suggestions, but the reason for this follows below.
My solution was to identify maples in the fall when they still had leaves, and put a paint dot on the trunk. So in about two weeks I'm going to start tapping the trees I marked. I marked only a handful of trees, 4-5, but if the statistics are true and you get up to 10 gallons of sap per tree, I should have enough sap to hopefully make a quart or two of finished syrup.
It is a fun project that I learned in junior high school. My son and daughter have fun with it as well.
