Hinge small aspen?

The property I hunt was heavily select cut about 10 or so years ago. The regeneration that occurred was basically all aspen. There are LARGE oaks, some ash, white pine, and maple left over, but these are a relatively small portion of the forest makeup.

I have about 3 acres of food plots on this 100+/- acres, tons of acorn forage from the oaks, some old growth apple trees, etc. Come spring, there are still uneaten groceries in my plots so I feel there is sufficient food on the property. I don't think I have enough cover to hold deer when the woods get human pressure.

My question is this... Is it possible to use these 2-5" diameter aspen to create bedding areas? I spent some time out there Sunday to see what it would look like. I picked two small test areas and took down 12-15 trees in each, but i'm not sure I will get the result I want even in a large area taking down all the trees. I have a feeling I will just end up with ferns growing to the top of my hinge and not much thickness once the leaves drop.

I actually didn't really hinge these trees. I tried and it worked OK but the bark didn't hold great. So I ended up pulling them over and wedging them or weaving them together like pickup sticks. Some I would make a small cut on the back side to prevent them from springing back up. This technique worked pretty well. Next time I will probably bring some twine and tie them off.

Anyone have any insight?
