Over the last several years in Michigan, the state's deer harvest report and numbers of hunters have seen a great decline. There are currently hunters that were surveyed that were only 39% satisfied with their overall hunting experience. The decrease in license sales is also grown to 12% fewer since 2004.

Why the falling numbers in deer harvest, license sales, and deer hunter satisfaction rates?

To combat the dwindling numbers, there has been a push for Antler Point Restrictions (APR)'s. APR's have been in place for over a decade in various areas of Michigan with hopes to see bigger more mature deer. This, however, has not solved the issues of the deer populations and the buck to doe ratio.

This is why going to a One Buck Rule known as an (OBR) would help solve the struggles Michigan is facing.

States like Indiana and Ohio have a One Buck Rule (OBR) and have a much higher satisfaction rate among hunters. The One Buck Rule (OBR) allows each hunter to kill one buck and one buck only.

Going to a One Buck Rule (OBR) would eliminate the need for Antler Point Restrictions. You can make your own choice if you want to shoot the younger deer or if you want to pursue the bigger more mature buck. Some limit of three to four antlerless kill tags should be in effect also depending on the county. This also encourages a hunter to harvest an antlerless deer as well. This would benefit the herd to bring the buck to doe ratio to a healthy level.

Michigan is currently one of the worst states to hunt in the United States. By moving to a One Buck Rule (OBR) it would help balance the deer herd in Michigan and increase both in-state and out-of-state license sales as well as increase the hunter satisfaction rate.

Please sign this petition and let us get Michigan back to having a healthy more mature deer population!

The petitioner makes a couple of claims that I am not sure of:
1. Eliminates the need for APR's.
2. Would help balance the deer herd.
3. Michigan is currently one of the worst states to hunt in.

It does have over 11,000 signatures on their way to 15,000.

I know the OBR has been discussed frequently on this site, and my point is not to debate whether Mi should have an OBR, but would an OBR do any of these things in your opinion?

I could see it helping to balance a deer herd that needed it...because people that wanted to shoot multiple deer would be inclined to shoot more does.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
