Penmanship

I was taught penmanship by Catholic Nuns.
We were taught that your index finger was on top of the pencil, near the tip, your middle finger supported the pencil, and your thumb was on the side of the pencil maybe a half inch back.
When I see some people write, I can tell they went to a public school.
