Powder paint is an art. When done right, it is strong. It CAN still chip, but not crack and break like other paints. A couple things to look for:
1. Are the eyes free of paint? If yes, the jig maker took his time and cared for the process. If not, good luck getting the paint out. That said, if someone tells you to simply use an eye poper, they are NOT cured right. Cured jigs will screw up an eye popper.
2. If you throw a jig on the cement floor, does the paint shatter and flake off? If so, probaby not cured right.
3. Look at the head of the jig. Did they simply snap it off and paint it leaving an ugly dot or tit? Do they clean excess flashing off the hook?
4. Do they sell jigs with visible holes in the lead? Pock marks? Dimples in the paint? Does it look mass produced?
5. When painting multi colors does it look like the dipped it leaving visible rings or does it blend like airbrush work?
I cannot speak for everyone but I use Matzuo sickle hooks. I used to use red but what I found was the process used to chemically treat the red compound causes a sharpness issue as these hooks are chemically sharpened. Bronze and black chrome appear much stronger and sharper.
This is were others might bash. There are a lot of us out there. The nice thing is that we all sell different stuff. We can exist together. Mad Viking uses Mustad Lil Nasty hooks. Good hooks just a slightly different configuration and they might work better in their molds. They have a pretty good design they sell.
Internet guys can charge less than shops because we don't have that store overhead. Keep in mind that guys on the up and up are selling with Michigan sales tax and paying the required 10% federal sport fishing exise tax put on most tackle.
Check us all out, find the jig design you like in the color combinations you like. We all do slightly different stuff. If we only sold 5 base colors, we wouldn't be in business long.
